What Is a Bernedoodle?

Bernedoodles are adorable, they are personable and they are highly intelligent, but what exactly ARE they? Today we are going to delve into the history of the Bernedoodle. We will discuss why they make such excellent family companions and explain what sets a Midwest Bernedoodles apart from the pack.

A Poodle Met a Berner…

Traditional Bernedoodles are a cross between a Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. Poodles are known for being highly intelligent, excellent family dogs and loyal working dogs. Their tight, spiraled coats are excellent for allergy sufferers. While most people envision a perfectly clipped fancy show dog when they think of the Poodle, the breed was originated in Europe for hunting. That trademark curly coat helped to protect the Poodle from chilly waters while retrieving the birds that their owners were hunting. Originally, the breed was a large breed but later was bred to have three size variations: standard, miniature or toy. The Poodle comes in an assortment of colors and sizes, but one thing remains the same: their fabulous brain.

Blossom

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, but lovable dog originally bred to be a working dog in the mountains of Switzerland. Known for their lovable nature, the “Berner” is the 27th most popular dog in the AKC breeding registry. Berner’s made a career out of protecting their herds on Swiss dairy farms before making their way to the United States where they grew extremely popular as family pets. You can recognize a Berner by their gorgeous tricolor coat and their distinctive, yet affectionate eyes.

…And then there were Bernedoodles

The first official Bernedoodle was bred in 2003. When put together, the Poodle and the Bernese Mountain Dog turn into the dog of many families’ dreams. The traditional Bernedoodle is of decent size and they boast an allergy-friendly coat thanks to their Poodle ancestry. The Bernedoodle is smart and eager to please, making them easily trainable and allows them to adapt to many different lifestyles. Bernedoodles are perfect candidates for therapy work, agility trials or just being a cuddly family friend.

At Midwest Bernedoodles we not only breed first generation Bernedoodles, but we are also proud to offer Australian Bernedoodles which are crosses between our Bernese Mountain Dogs and one of our ALAA registered Australian Labradoodles. This cross will be a more suitable match for allergy sufferers as our Australian Labradoodles are very allergy-friendly.
